Summary

The Premium Family Emergency Survival Bag (72 hours for 4 people) has many great features that will help you get through an emergency.  It has just about everything you could need including, dehydrated food meals, emergency water packs, first aid supplies, LED lantern, water filtration system, emergency blankets, bath wipes, ferro rod, Instafire tinder, and other survival gear.

Like the 2-person bug out bag above, whenever there are food items involved, they will have a 5-year shelf life attached to the food contents. That doesn’t mean that you can’t use the bag itself once the food has expired, just make sure you replace the old food with newer versions of the same type.

Keep in mind that with these types of pre-loaded bug out bags, you may get a little variation then what is listed originally by Sustain Supply Company.  The reason for the variation is that the company has to source the products that go inside of the bug out bag, and sometimes a certain supplier may run out of something.

For example, freeze-dried food is very popular, so Sustain Supply Company may originally use Mountain House but then have to switch to Wise Company if they can’t fulfill the original needs.  Not a big deal at all, just a little different.

Unlike the 2-person bag, this bag doesn’t leave any room for adding extra contents like clothes.  So if you need to add those things, you might have to pack a separate bag for that.

Our Analysis, Comparisons & Test Results

performance comparison

To start, I suggest the man in the family carries this pack because of the weight.  The weight from this pack comes primarily in the form of water. Or, it could be a bag that you put in your bug out vehicle.  I would imagine it would get difficult for a woman to handle after an hour on the road hiking with it on her back.

You have to admire this bag because of the quality of the contents.  When we first opened it, we noticed the water packets came from Datrex.  Datrex really set the standard for emergency water supplies and created a product that tastes like premium bottled water.  Each packet that comes in this packet is approximately 4.25 ounces and has a 5-year shelf life.

And if you happen to run out of the provided water, you can use the water filter that comes with this bag. Drinking water that hasn’t been treated or filtered can lead to serious illness.

The Sustain Survival Straw is rated to filter up to 1500 liters, or 396 gallons, of water and has a flow rate of 450 milliliters per minute. Free of BPA materials, this straw keeps harmful chemicals out of drinking water during outdoor travels.

When it comes to the food in this bag, you will get nothing but the best from the Readywise Company.  Their freeze-dried foods taste fantastic and will provide you and your family with the nutrients that you need to make it through the next 72 hours.  All you need to do is add water to these freeze-dried food packets and you will have a hot meal.

What we really liked about this emergency bag is it came with its own portable stove and small cookware set. It’s compact and lightweight and fits perfectly in this bag.  You’ll also notice that there are bowls and utensils included with this kit, so you won’t have to worry about it! The makers didn’t miss a beat with this survival kit.

You will also be getting a collapsable LED light with the pack.  This is such an important detail because you never know what situation you are going to find yourself in with your family when SHTF. The batteries aren’t included, so just make sure to add some to this bug out bag kit.

There are other survival items included in this kit including flashlights, a fully stocked first aid kit, emergency blankets, bath wipes, ferro rods, emergency whistles, Instafire tinder, companion knife, and snaplights.

Comfort And Fit

We gave this bag a 7 in terms of comfort and fit because it’s a little harder to handle if you plan on carrying it on your back for any length of time simply because of its weight.

The padding on the hip straps and the shoulder straps really help make this bag easier to carry due to its weight.

At approximately 32 pounds, this bag got a little heavy for me, personally, when I was lugging it around.  As mentioned above, the man of the family would need to throw this on his back if you had to pick up and leave with your family quickly.  It’s really going to be up to your situation at the time, but you could also use this bag and store it in your bug out vehicle.

The compression straps fit nicely and worked well to keep the pack close to the body in order to support the weight better. We would have liked to see more padding on the straps in contrast to the weight, but we were still able to carry it comfortably enough.

Durability

The Premium Family Emergency Survival Bag (72 hours for 4 people) is a very durable bug out bag but because of its weight, it might wear a little faster than other bags on our list.

Overall, we were impressed with how well this Premium Family Emergency Survival Bag (72 hours for 4 people) held up when messing around with it. When we talk about durability, we primarily are talking about the material and the design of the bag.  Since this bag is made of nylon, the durability was measured by denier. We couldn’t find the denier number for you of this bag, but typically these types of bags are at least measuring at 600 denier if they are anything good at all.

You have to be cautious when first looking at the material types of any bug out bag you may be considering because denier doesn’t necessarily measure the strength and ruggedness as much as it measures the individual yarn strands and how it is woven together.

Most of the bags that we looked at were made from 600D nylon, which is where we would like to see this minimum threshold. With that said, we’ve learned through reviewing these bags that having a higher denair number seems to give the bag a higher level of durability. Higher denier fabrics will also weigh a little more, which gives the bag more strength.

Zippers, buckles, and stitching

When it came to the zippers, buckles, and stitching we gave this bag an 8 out of 10.  We didn’t necessarily approve of the zippers, as they seemed a little flimsy.

We would have liked to see YKK zippers on this bag, but maybe these area few of the things that had to be given up in order to keep the price tag affordable.

The zippers are extremely important and we were disappointed that they weren’t stronger supported on this bag or the manufacturers didn’t decide to invest the extra money to put the YKK zippers on the bag because then this bag would be perfect!

Storage Design (Pockets, MOLLE)

The Premium Family Emergency Survival Bag (72 hours for 4 people) received a 6 out of 10 on storage design because it didn’t have as many pockets as we would have liked, plus you couldn’t add any extra things to it besides what it comes with.

At the same time, this is already a heavy bag and packed full of items, so that’s the reason why you can’t add anything extra to it.  There isn’t heavy MOLLE webbing on this bag, but there is a few places where you can add a few extra odds and ends if you would like.  There are 3 main pockets on the front that are stashed with important survival items already.

Keep in mind that you can replace any of the items that the pack comes with, with other items that you might think are more important to your liking.  But again, when it comes to storage design, you’re pretty much going to be stuck with what the bag comes with and not much more room.

Water Resistance

The Premium Family Emergency Survival Bag (72 hours for 4 people), like most bags, is water-resistant, but definitely not waterproof.   There is different terminology when it comes to talking about whether or not gear will soak up water when wet.

When you are talking about a bag being waterproof, you’ve got water-resistant, water repellent, and waterproof.  Typically the density of the fabric is what causes the material to be water-resistant.  The more dense a fabric is, the longer it will take for water to seep in.

Below is a quick idea of the differences between water-resistant, water repellent, and waterproof according to the HZO blog:

Water-resistant: able to resist the penetration of water to some degree but not entirely

Water Repellent: not easily penetrated by water, especially as a result of being treated for such a purpose with a surface coating.

Waterproof: impervious to water

Most of the bug out bags we looked at, as mentioned above, are made from various degrees of nylon and polyester, which are all primarily labeled as “water-resistant.”  This is typically how most bags you will find will be marked.

I always recommend that if you want to secure your bag a little more, you can always coat it with some waterproof spray and a seem sealer.  You will want to make sure you get rid of any dirt or particles before you do this, which is why it makes it easiest to use the water-resistant spray right after you pull your bag out of the box.

Our Final Verdict

The Premium Family Emergency Survival Bag (72 hours for 4 people) is a superior pre-made bug out bag that is second to none.  All of the items are excellent quality and are chosen with safety in mind.  This is an option if you are looking for an easy way out in terms of having to pack your own stuff.  This bag has already done that for you.

Remember that with these pre-made bug out bags, you are going to need to rotate the survival water packets after 5 years.  The freeze-dried food packages that come in the kit have a 25 year shelf life so you won’t have to worry about that at all.

Final Thoughts

The Premium Family Emergency Survival Bag (72 hours for 4 people) can be thrown anywhere in your house and left for up to 5 years before you have to start thinking of it again.

Just because you buy a pre-made bug out bag, doesn’t mean it’s going to have everything in it that you want.  Make sure when you get the bag you inspect it carefully and make sure all items are in the bag as specified and make sure that all of the food items have secure packaging and nothing is punctured.
